Santa Monica Studio drops the release date and teases a Kratos sequel in the god of war series at Comic-Con.
Death was supposed to be the end for Faye. At San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, Santa Monica Studio made clear it is only the beginning. Now, the beginning has a firm date. God of War: Laufey launches exclusively on PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027.
The announcement came during the “Forging God of War’s Next Heroes” panel in Ballroom 20. Game director Ariel Lawrence and Santa Monica Studio head of creative Cory Barlog shared the stage with the cast. The cast included Deborah Ann Woll (Laufey/Faye), Christopher Judge (Kratos), Jack Quaid (the cube companion Phranque), and Perlina Lau (Rue). After months of speculation following the game’s State of Play reveal in June, the February 16, 2027 window is official.
A Story Parallel to the Classics
God of War: Laufey picks up immediately after the funeral that opens the 2018 game. Faye awakens in the Everywhen, a chaotic afterlife realm where gods from across mythologies clash for power. The plans she set in motion to protect Kratos and Atreus are unraveling. She must fight her way through this strange, magic-soaked land to safeguard the family she left behind.
The game runs parallel to the events of God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök. Players control Faye rather than the Ghost of Sparta. They experience intimate, brutal combat and exploration in a world that expands the Norse setting while introducing new threats and allies. Early footage showed Faye wielding a glowing sword alongside her blue-cube companion. This all happened amid floating structures and dramatic skies.
The Panel Delivered More Than a Date
Barlog opened with a bigger surprise: a future Kratos-led God of War game is already in development. It will arrive after Laufey and connect directly to her story. “Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next,” Barlog said.
The cast offered personal insight. Woll described Faye as a “reluctant hero,” comparing her to John McClane—someone who ends up saving the day while she is just trying to get home. Judge reflected on Faye’s lasting influence on Kratos: “I always thought that Faye was the genesis of the change of Kratos… That’s where it began in him.” Quaid, playing the enigmatic cube Phranque, noted the character’s innocence and presence in the moment. This quality is a contrast to his own anxious nature.

Why This Matters for the Franchise
The 2018 soft reboot and its sequel redefined God of War with a focus on fatherhood, growth, and mythic scale. Putting Faye at the center continues that intimate storytelling while expanding the lore in unexpected directions. Fans who wanted more Kratos immediately got reassurance that the series is not leaving him behind. Instead, his next chapter is simply waiting in the wings, tied tightly to the events of this game.
Early reactions to the June gameplay footage were mixed, with praise for the combat and visuals tempered by some disappointment that Kratos is not the playable lead. The Comic-Con panel and firm 2027 date should help focus attention on what Santa Monica is actually building. They are offering a new perspective on a story many thought they already knew.
God of War: Laufey is available to wishlist now on the PlayStation Store. Mark February 16, 2027. Faye’s fight is just getting started.
