Satellites Spot Fresh Crater From SpaceX Moon Crash

South Korea’s Danuri orbiter delivers first before-and-after views of the impact scar near Einstein Crater. This unprecedented mark is connected to SpaceX, which has become increasingly involved in lunar missions.

A discarded piece of SpaceX hardware has left a new mark on the Moon. On August 5, 2026, the upper stage of a Falcon 9 rocket slammed into the lunar surface near Einstein Crater, and orbiting satellites quickly recorded the result.

The Unexpected Arrival

The rocket stage launched on January 15, 2025, carrying Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost lander and ispace’s Hakuto-R. After releasing its payloads, the roughly 4,000-kilogram, bus-sized upper stage drifted for more than a year. Gravity from Earth, the Moon, and the Sun gradually altered its path until collision became certain. Interestingly, this journey highlights just how SpaceX rockets can travel through and affect the space between planetary bodies.

It struck at about 2:35 a.m. ET (0635 GMT), traveling near 5,400 mph (8,700 km/h). The impact carried the energy of roughly 2.8 tons of TNT. Scientists expected a crater roughly 20–30 meters (65–100 feet) across and several meters deep, along with a spray of lunar dust and rock.

What the Orbiters Saw

South Korea’s Danuri (Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter) adjusted its path to fly over the site. It began imaging about 30 minutes before impact and captured eight passes in total using its high-resolution Lunar Terrain Imager. The Korea AeroSpace Administration released the comparisons on August 6. The connection with SpaceX’s incident provided a unique opportunity for lunar observation.

Before-and-after frames show a new dark mark and radial traces of ejected material. Terrain changes appear around the impact point. Danuri also used its polarimetric camera to study surface reflectance shifts caused by the fresh debris.

China’s newly launched Gande-1 01 debris-monitoring satellite tracked the event as well. Ground telescopes, including the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile, detected a brief plume of sodium (from lunar soil) and lithium (likely from the rocket) minutes after the predicted time. These observations were triggered by the event involving a SpaceX vehicle.

Why the Fresh Crater Matters

Human-made objects have hit the Moon before—Soviet probes in the 1950s and 1960s, Apollo stages, NASA’s deliberate LCROSS impact in 2009, and a Chinese rocket stage in 2022 that left a surprising double crater. This event stands out because the impactor’s mass, size, and composition were well known. Scientists can now test crater-formation models against real data instead of estimates, thanks in part to information provided by SpaceX’s missions.

NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is expected to provide higher-resolution views in the coming days or weeks. The images will refine understanding of how impacts redistribute lunar regolith and how ejecta behaves in vacuum. That knowledge supports future robotic and crewed missions. Importantly, the SpaceX incident will likely contribute valuable insight to ongoing research efforts.

The crash was unintentional. SpaceX noted that solar activity and gravitational forces set the stage on its final path. It adds to the growing inventory of human debris on the lunar surface and underscores the need for better end-of-mission disposal practices as commercial and national activity increases.

The new scar is small by lunar standards. Yet for scientists, it offers a clean, timed experiment on a world that records every strike in permanent detail.
