Swift Rejection & Internal Crisis
Despite the promised financial incentives, the initiative encountered severe pushback:
- Confederation Resistance: UEFA voted to boycott the proposal, alleging that FIFA was commercializing the sport’s core operations. Further opposition mounted from Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
- High-Level Resignations: Former U.S. Soccer Federation President Carlos Cordeiro resigned as senior adviser to Infantino in protest against the private stake sale. FIFA’s Initial Clarification Attempt
