More Screen Time, Sharper Teen Minds?

Finnish study finds childhood screen use linked to better adolescent cognition.

Parents often hear that screens dull young minds. An eight-year Finnish study now points the other way: children who logged more screen time tended to show stronger cognitive processing as teenagers.

Researchers from the Universities of Jyväskylä and Eastern Finland tracked participants in the long-running PANIC study on physical activity and nutrition. The analysis included 260 adolescents (124 girls and 136 boys) averaging 15.8 years old. They measured physical activity and sedentary behaviour both by questionnaire and with a combined heart-rate and movement sensor across childhood into the teen years. At the final assessment they tested learning, attention and working memory with the CogState battery.

Higher cumulative screen time from childhood onward was associated with better overall cognition. It also linked to faster reaction times and greater accuracy on working-memory tasks. “The findings suggest that screen time can support children’s and adolescents’ cognitive processing,” said doctoral researcher Petri Jalanko. “Presumably, the essential point here is what kind of things they do in their screen time.”

Content may matter more than minutes

Jalanko and colleagues stress the result is an association, not proof that screens make kids smarter. Digital activities that demand problem-solving, creativity or active learning could explain the link. Passive scrolling or endless video loops may not deliver the same benefit. The researchers urge parents and teachers to steer screen use toward thinking rather than pure consumption.

Physical activity showed a more complicated picture. Girls who accumulated more light-intensity activity over the years had better working memory. Boys benefited from higher levels of guided or organised activity. Surprisingly, lower self-reported unsupervised physical activity also tracked with better cognitive scores. Device-measured total activity and sedentary time showed no clear ties to cognition, possibly because sensors cannot distinguish what a child is actually doing while moving or sitting still.

Why this matters

These years shape brain development that can influence education and work far into adulthood. Public-health messaging has long treated screen time as largely harmful and physical activity as an automatic good. The PANIC findings suggest the relationships are more nuanced and may differ by sex and by the type of activity involved.

The team calls for intervention studies to test cause and effect. Until then, the practical takeaway is balance: keep kids moving while encouraging screen time that exercises the mind.
