Google has temporarily disabled a newly introduced artificial intelligence feature in Google Earth. This follows widespread concern that the tool could be leveraged to fabricate realistic, yet completely false, satellite imagery.
The feature—which initially allowed users to generate custom elements and alterations within map views—sparked alarms across the OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) community and tech circles. Critics and journalists demonstrated how the tool could be used to manipulate visual data. For example, users could create misleading scenarios such as fake structural damage. Or they could create nonexistent military installations or simulated disaster zones.
Because tools like Google Earth have traditionally served as a trusted gold standard for journalists, researchers, and investigators verifying real-world events on the ground, the capability to easily generate synthetic geography raised major red flags. In particular, it increased concerns regarding automated misinformation.
In an official update shared via social media (including a post on X via @NewsFromGoogle), the company addressed the controversy:

Google also noted that the generated images were explicitly marked as AI-generated. Importantly, these did not natively inject themselves into the primary, public-facing Google Earth globe experience. However, the ease with which users could capture screenshots of fabricated landscapes and pass them off as real events prompted the swift shutdown.
As generative AI continues to blur the lines between synthetic creation and verified reality, tech platforms face mounting pressure to balance creative tooling with robust safeguards against digital deception. For now, Google Earth’s experimental AI imagery tool remains offline. Additionally, developers now head back to the drawing board to build stricter limitations.
